Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about pressure and RO tanks: capacity selection, pre-charge pressure, diaphragms and installation.

What does Ekol Tank manufacture?
We manufacture pressurised metal tanks for water treatment systems, booster pump sets and heating installations. Our range consists of reverse osmosis pressure tanks together with booster and expansion tanks; capacities run from 8 to 100 litres.
Where does Ekol Tank manufacture?
Production takes place at our own facility in Gebze, Kocaeli. The entire process, from design to final testing, is carried out in Türkiye.
Are the products locally manufactured?
Yes. As Ekol Tank Metal Kimya Makine Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. we carry out all of our production in Türkiye.
Which product series does Ekol Tank offer?
We have two main series: reverse osmosis pressure tanks (RO series, 8-80 litres) and booster and expansion tanks (vertical and horizontal, 24-100 litres).
How many different models do you manufacture?
There are 6 models in the RO series and 8 models in the booster and expansion tank series, counting both vertical and horizontal versions.
What does an expansion tank do?
In closed-loop heating systems water expands as it heats up. The expansion tank takes up that extra volume, protecting the installation from overpressure and keeping the system pressure steady.
What does a booster tank do?
In a booster system the tank works as a pressurised water reserve. For small draw-offs it supplies water from within itself without starting the pump, which stops the pump from cycling on and off constantly.
Is there a difference between a booster tank and an expansion tank?
The product is the same; the name changes with the application. In a booster system it works as a pressurised water reserve, and in a closed-loop heating installation it absorbs expansion.
How does a pressure tank work?
The inside of the tank is divided into two chambers by a flexible membrane. One side holds the pre-charge air, the other holds water. As water enters, the air is compressed and the pressure rises; when water is drawn off, the compressed air pushes the membrane back and forces the water out.
What is the difference between a tank with a membrane and one without?
In membrane tanks the air and the water never touch. In tanks without a membrane the air gradually dissolves into the water and is lost; this is the most common cause of failure in that type of tank.
What does a reverse osmosis tank do?
An RO membrane produces water slowly and cannot meet instantaneous demand. The pressure tank stores that output and delivers ready, pressurised water the moment the tap is opened.
Will the system work without a reverse osmosis tank?
It will, but the water will flow from the tap very slowly. The job of the tank is to turn the membrane's slow output into instant supply.
Should I choose a vertical or a horizontal tank?
The two are technically identical; the difference is the mounting orientation. If ceiling height is sufficient but floor space is tight, choose vertical; if the ceiling is low, a horizontal model suits better.
When is a horizontal tank preferred?
It is preferred in boiler rooms with low ceilings, in packaged booster sets that need to be mounted above the pump, and in cabinet installations. The footed body allows mounting on a chassis.
When is a vertical tank preferred?
It is preferred in plant rooms where floor space is limited but ceiling height is sufficient. It is positioned against a wall and suits lining several tanks up side by side.
How much difference in space is there between a vertical and a horizontal model of the same capacity?
A 100-litre vertical model needs roughly 919 mm of height including its feet, while the horizontal model of the same capacity needs only 390 mm. In return, the horizontal model requires 815 mm of length.
How do I know which capacity to choose?
For heating installations the deciding factors are the total water volume of the system, the operating pressure and the maximum temperature; for booster systems they are the pump flow rate and the cut-in and cut-out pressures.
What tank size is needed for a detached house?
For single-dwelling booster and combi boiler installations the 24 litre entry capacity of the range is usually considered. The final choice must be made according to the water volume of the installation.
What tank size is needed for an apartment building booster set?
For multi-storey building booster sets the 50-100 litre range is usually preferred. The number of flats, the storey height and the pump ratings must be included in the calculation.
What problems does an undersized tank cause?
In heating installations the safety valve discharges water constantly and the system needs frequent topping up. In booster systems the pump starts several times a minute, which increases energy consumption and shortens pump life.
Is there any harm in choosing an oversized tank?
There is no technical harm; it takes up more space and costs more. When you are unsure about capacity, going one model up is usually the safer choice.
Does a tank deliver its full nominal capacity?
No. Part of the volume is taken up by the pre-charge air, so the usable water quantity is below the figure on the label. This applies to all membrane pressure tanks.
What is pre-charge pressure?
It is the air pressure inside the tank when the tank is empty of water. It is the setting that directly determines how much water the tank will take in and how strongly it will push it back out.
What should the pre-charge pressure be?
The factory setting is 2 bar (29 psi) on our booster and expansion tanks and 0.4 bar (6 psi) on the RO series. In booster applications it is set roughly 0.2 bar below the pump cut-in pressure.
What happens if the pre-charge pressure is too low?
The tank does not fill enough and the usable volume drops. You get weak flow at the tap.
What happens if the pre-charge pressure is too high?
Water finds it harder to enter, the tank does not fill completely and the pump starts more often.
How is the pre-charge pressure of a tank measured?
The tank is drained completely, then the measurement is taken at the air valve with a pressure gauge similar to a tyre gauge. A measurement taken while there is water in the tank does not give a correct result.
Does the pre-charge pressure drop over time?
The low gas permeability of the BUTYL-EPDM membrane keeps that loss to a minimum. Even so, a periodic check is recommended on large-volume tanks.
The water from my tap is weak, what could be causing it?
The most common cause is incorrect pre-charge pressure. Draining the tank and measuring at the air valve is the first thing to check.
My pump starts too often, what should I do?
There are two likely causes: the tank capacity is insufficient, or the pre-charge pressure is wrong. Measure the pre-charge pressure first; if the problem persists, you need to move up one capacity.
Why is frequent pump starting a problem?
The most important factor determining the life of a booster pump is not the total running time but the number of starts. At every start the motor draws a high current and the mechanical parts are put under strain.
Why does the safety valve keep discharging water?
In heating installations this usually indicates that the expansion tank is undersized or that its pre-charge pressure is wrong.
What type of membrane do you use?
Our booster and expansion tank series uses a BUTYL-EPDM membrane.
What is the advantage of a BUTYL-EPDM membrane?
Butyl rubber is a material with very low gas permeability; it stops the pre-charge air from leaking through to the water side. EPDM adds flexibility, temperature resistance and resistance to ageing.
What is your maximum operating pressure?
Our booster and expansion tanks are manufactured and tested to a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar (145 psi), and the RO series to 6.9 bar (100 psi).
In what temperature range do the products operate?
Between 4°C and 50°C. They must not be used in uninsulated areas where there is a risk of freezing, or directly on a hot water line.
Can the tank be used outdoors or in a garage?
No. The minimum operating temperature is 4°C; water freezing causes permanent damage both to the membrane and to the body.
Can the tank be connected to a hot water line?
No. The maximum operating temperature is 50°C; our products are designed for cold water applications.
Are your connection sizes standard?
Yes. All booster and expansion tanks have a 1" BSP connection. In the RO series, domestic models have a 1/4" NPT connection and large-capacity models a 1" BSP connection.
What is the difference between BSP and NPT?
They are two different thread standards and do not fit directly together. Choosing the model that matches the inlet size of your equipment is the first thing to check before installation.
What is your body material?
Our products are manufactured with a metal body. Compared with plastic alternatives it is more resistant to impact, to pressure cycling and to deformation over time.
Can your products be used with drinking water?
Our reverse osmosis series is NSF certified; its components in contact with water have been tested in an independent laboratory. The booster and expansion tank series is manufactured for installation applications.
What is NSF certification?
NSF is an international organisation that audits the material safety of products in contact with water through independent laboratory testing. It is the basic criterion to look for in tanks connected to a drinking water line.
Are the products tested before they are shipped?
Yes. Every tank goes through a pressure and leak-tightness check before shipping and is delivered with the factory pre-charge pressure set.
How long does a tank last?
If the pre-charge pressure is kept correct and the operating temperature range is respected, it will work without trouble for many years. The two factors that shorten its life the most are incorrect pre-charge pressure and freezing.
What is water hammer, and does a tank prevent it?
It is the pressure surge that occurs when a valve closes suddenly, and it damages the installation. A membrane tank of sufficient volume absorbs that surge thanks to its cushion of compressed air.
How is the tank installed?
Because our products are manufactured to standard connection sizes, they connect to an existing installation without an adapter. Before installation, check that the pre-charge pressure matches the system values.
Do you produce custom sizes?
We do not produce custom sizes outside our standard series.
